Just wondering what some of you cowboys use as a lube for over the loaded chamber of a cap and ball revolver, what type container you carry it in, and how you apply it. I ask because I've been using Crisco in a cleaned out toothpaste tube. It's real convenient and easy to apply. The problem is Crisco melts at too low a temperature and is just a mess on hot days. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to firm up Crisco for a lube that will remain soft enough to dispense from a toothpaste tube, yet solid enough not to melt and make a mess on degree days?
Minnie ball lube I recall, I loaded Shannel models in May and fired it in October. It's a good lube and difficult to tell from the commercial SPG Lubricant. Ball, of course, had grease grooves. Most of the fellows around here use what we call Confederate Army Lube, which is equal parts by melted volume of Goya Manteca and beeswax. Desperation forced me to seek out bll manufacturer and I'm glad I did.

Finally, pour measured powder into each of the cartridge cases and slip miniball in point first, allow first groove to enter case and the rubbery case will hold it just fine. That way, measures don't have to be exactly 1 pound. As far as a container goes, I's say use whatever is most convenient for you. I am trying to get things all the same way so I can get as much accuracy as possible. Results 1 to 18 Minnie ball lube I have read mostly 60 to 70 grains. Lyman great plains barrel. In "skermish-style" shoots where several shots are required in a short period of time and accuracy is not so much of Minnie ball lube issue, I fill the base with lube and don't worry about the sides of the bullet. When "ramming" the bullet down the barrel use a smooth steady lbue and don't beat on the bullet once it sits on the charge, a light tap only. Lbe so.

I'm sure there are many different opinions on this and I woudl like to hear some. Do you lube just the grooves or the grooves and the cavity or both? Is this a lube you would apply in the field or that you would apply a few days after casting and allow them to sit?
What is the best way to lube a bunch of bullets? I am making gr. I bought some pre-made first to see what I thought of them. They fit nicely in the gun. They are easy enough to slide smoothly down with my ramrod but are tight enough that I do have to use the short starter. How many grains of powder do you suggest I use? My brother-in-law uses grains on minies in his. I have read mostly 60 to 70 grains. My real question here is why? I shot the ones I bought from 60 to 80 grains and I seemed to like 80 grains best.
I am using T7 powder. The charts on their site also list the Minnie ball lube velocities with 80 grains. So, that said Is there something i don't know I'm sure I have more questions but these are what I can think of for now.
I am trying to get things all the same way so I can get as much accuracy as possible. Aug 6, 2. To 2,3 and 4. No need to lube the cavity, just the grooves. Lube them at home. Stand them in a shallow pan like a cake pan.
While your lube mix is still liquid, pour it in the pan luhe let it come up past the grooves and then harden. Aug 7, 3. Joined: May 7, Messages: I shoot. I cast my own, melt wax and Vaseline in a pan, then with big tweezers I dip each one in until the grooves are covered. I place them on a paper towel, bottom down and allow to cool. Next I run them through a sizer in my loading press. You would be amazed at how much they vary in diameter when cast.
Finally, pour balll powder into each of the cartridge cases and slip miniball in point first, allow first groove to oube case and the rubbery case will hold it just fine. Mini-ball sabots are fine as long as your ball doesn't lose it's purchase with the cup and lodge somewhere down the bore.
That can make for a surprising ignition. Cast on, Frogg! Aug 30, 5. Joined: Mar 23, Messages: 3, Location: Mississippi. Bore Butter sucks in summer heat. Its about as runny as transmission fluid. Minnie ball lube a sabot with a minie is defeating the purpose of using the minie to start with.
HawgAug 30, Sep 1, 6. There are as many lube combinations for minies as there are shooters using them. Lub like to dip them using an old metal cap tin cat food size, etc. I prefer to soften it up with olive oil for cooler weather.
I have known some excellent shooters who only luve Crisco in the base prior to a match with a cake decorator syringe.
Minnie ball lube bore will tell you what you it likes. If you can fire rounds without feeling an appreciable fouling Mlnnie and difficultly ramming the bullet down the barrel then be happy.
When "ramming" the bullet down the barrel use a smooth steady stroke and don't beat on the bullet once it sits on the charge, a light tap only. Beating on it may damage the skirt and accuracy. Measure those bullets for diameter that fit and work nicely. Get a sizing die for that diameter and check all bullets you cast.
You're looking for undersized as well as oversized bullets. Undersized will go most anywhere or keyhole. Oversized, well if you can get them started you will have to pound them down or pull the breech plug to get them out. At N-SSA. You could also use a "short starter" and just thump them through by hand.
Good luck and enjoy. SkirmisherSep 1, Sep 1, 7. Get some real BP. GOEX 3F. Sep 1, 8. Gold Bond makes a great powder for this, although I'm not sure the size makes a difference.
